What is the Effect of Smoking on the Risk of Developing Community Acquired Pneumonia?

Several studies have reported a link between tobacco smoking and community acquired pneumonia (CAP). These studies have shown that current smokers are at higher risk of developing CAP compared to those who have never smoked in their life. Tobacco smoking has been shown to cause structural changes in the respiratory tract as well as changes in the immune system that predisposes smokers to develop CAP.

We aim to comprehensively summarise the available evidence worldwide to measure the effect of current, past and passive smoking on the risk of developing CAP. Findings from our study would provide strong scientific evidence to support recommendations for smoking cessation, particularly in people who are at high risk of developing CAP.
