Study Results - Inspiratory muscle training for adults - will it help recovery after pneumonia?

This pilot study to look at the tolerability, acceptability, and safety of a respiratory muscle training device in patients following an episode of community-acquired pneumonia has now finished recruitment. The study team are very grateful to all those who participated and who supported the study. Whilst the study was not designed to determine if the device provides benefits to participants in terms of improving their experience of recovery or hastening recovery, initial results demonstrate that using the device is tolerable and safe. The participants reported improvement in their symptoms and daily activity levels during the study, and lung function improved over the course of follow-up. The next step is to develop a larger study to test the theory that inspiratory muscle training provides benefit to patients in recovery following community-acquired pneumonia.
