SCAPA - Welcomes new sites

Our Study of Community Acquired Pneumonia in Adults, or ‘SCAPA’ for short, is now into its eleventh year of recruiting patients who are admitted with Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) to Nottingham University Hospitals. Data from the study has provided useful research into the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia, Streptococcus pneumoniae, since the introduction of the childhood pneumococcal vaccination in the UK in 2006.
Within the last six months, SCAPA has started recruiting patients in two other large teaching hospitals in the UK - the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Royal Liverpool University Hospitals. Once enough patients are recruited, we will compare the data and samples collected between the three UK sites. We hope this will provide useful information on any similarities and differences in both the causes of pneumonia and how we treat patients admitted with CAP in different areas of the UK.”
