Pneumonia Treatment
Once a diagnosis of pneumonia is made, antibiotics are usually the mainstay of treatment; additional treatment may include oxygen, fluids through a drip and respiratory physiotherapy (to help clear lung secretions)
The majority of adults with pneumonia are treated in the community; however, around a third will require admission to hospital depending on the severity of the illness.
A small proportion of those admitted to hospital (<10%) will require admission to an intensive care unit due to severe illness.
